Conversations to Have Before College Move-in
Updated: Aug 31
For many of us, college move in day will be an exciting and emotional one. For those of us with severe food allergies, there is probably extra concern. So, I collected some notes from interviews and conversations with college students who have already made the transition. They suggest reaching out to the following departments before your move in day so that you arrive ready to handle college and your allergy. Below is a list of questions to ask:
Housing:
Are there room placement accommodations to help protect you?
Will you have access to a safe kitchen?
How to handle the situation if there are issues with your roommate brining food your allergic to into your room?
(Most say don’t wait to deal with this; it's important to know how to handle it before there’s ever an issue)
Roommate Conversation:
Don't wait to have "the allergy conversation" or avoid it.
Try to say something simple such as, “I have severe food allergies. I’m happy to talk about how we can make this work so that I feel safe and you feel comfortable too”.
Dining Services:
Do they handle foods in a way that prevents cross contamination?
Is there a dining manager who can answer your questions?
Are there safe dining options at your school on weekends or at night?
Disability Office:
Do you need to register your allergy with a particular department?
Are any documents needed from your doctor or high school? In other words, does anything replace your 504 or allergy plan at your college?
Health Services:
Who do you call first if you have a reaction late at night?
Do you need to fill out forms so that your college can share information with your parents?
Do they have epinephrine in dorms, and is anyone trained to use them?
Hopefully these questions will ease some of your move in day stress. Good luck and stay safe.
