Could Covid ending mRNA technology also end allergies?

Scientists from UPenn and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital have worked to create an mRNA-based allergy vaccine that they hope will one day end allergies. The basic concept is that mRNA vaccines can be adjusted to carry codes for fake allergens. When our bodies read the codes, they produce proteins like the ones produced by allergens. However, our bodies don’t overreact to the fake codes in the same way they would a real allergen. Therefore, the mRNA vaccine can be used to train our immune systems to not go into attack mode once the real allergens are introduced. In other words, the vaccine will trick our immune system so that it becomes familiar with the “allergen-like proteins.” Eventually, our bodies will recognize the real allergen proteins that they have become familiar with through exposure to the the fake mRNA codes. Scientists believe that our bodies will then hold back the histamines that are usually released when our bodies come into contact with an allergen. Without the release of histamines, we will no longer experience the symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.
So far, the vaccine has only been tested on mice. However, the mice responded well, and none of the mRNA vaccinated mice had an allergic reaction. (Penn Medicine article) Their overall response to the vaccine gives scientists a reason to be hopeful that mRNA vaccines may one day help cure seasonal and food allergies. Scientists are optimistic because the mRNA type of vaccines have been used before on humans for other conditions, like Covid. Also, the vaccines can be customized, so they believe the vaccines can be adjusted to cure any type of allergy. I think everyone can agree with Dr. Drew Weissman, Nobel Prize winner and one of the leaders of the study, when he said, “allowing people to partake in foods they were never able to eat would be incredibly rewarding, but I’ll even be happy if we can one day introduce a vaccine that allows parents to breathe just a little easier when sending their kids to class birthday parties.” (Penn Medicine article)
